Dancing alone

Dancing alone is the one activity that everyone enjoys in their private time. It is the first instinct to release stress and feel comfortable in your own skin. It’s perfect to do in your alone time and express every emotion you are experiencing. You just have to choose your favourite song, or the one that suits you at that moment, and let your body speak for itself. The higher the volume the better, to create the perfect atmosphere to dance the night or day away.  No one can judge you. It doesn't matter how well you move or horrific you deliver a dance step. You just have to let yourself go and feel freedom at its most genuine form.

DETAIL

My workspace is a monochromatic white room. It is filled with a long row of bookshelves filled with an infinite amount of novels and books which covers vary along the colors of the rainbow. The windows leave a wide sight to the exterior creating the illusion of a bigger space in the room. The walls are painted with a white vibrant layer of paint and the lights are intense, illuminating the whole room and brighten it up. My coworkers and I develop our tasks in desks that are separated by a wall, leaving our individual area for each one. It is in a whole, a minimalistic space, simple but efficient.

EXPLANATION

Art is a natural expression for humans and a crucial source for the study of antropology. The evolution of humanity has been followed by different artistic movements since prehistoric times. The evolution of philosophical tendencies borned in consequence of the french revolution can be detected in Delacroix’s paintings data 1820. Discoveries had also a very important part in the art world. The creation of the modern camera has influenced a series of paintings such as Monet’s impressionist pieces of art. Nowadays iconic paintings can be studied to explain historical periods due to its cultural and academic relevance.

I had never missed a plane in my life, until I went to London last year. My brothers and I were heading to the airport on time (WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN) but I started to feel dizzy so we decided to take a rest in a park nearby. Little did we know that we had missed the last train that we could take to arrive perfectly to our flight. And so Our reaction was to run and take the earliest taxi to the airport. Unfortunately the plane had already left the airport leaving us that whole night by ourselves in the waiting room. Luckily, the next day we got the tickets to Spain and we got home safe.

My bestfriend Elena

My soulmate is my best friend, Elena. I know her since we were in kindergarten. She is a lovely short-haired brunette with the darkest pair of eyes I have ever seen. When she smiles, tiny white pearls show up to bright up my day. Her skin is golden and as soft as cotton, while she is has dry sense of humor. I love her because who she is: brilliant, hilarious and caring. She is also capable of bearing with me everyday even though I can be really annoying. It is crazy to think that we have literally nothing in common. However, I am very sure that  my life would suck without her.

The park next to my house  looks like it was taken from a fantasy book. Along the long wood corridor that crosses the whole park, you can feel a magic feeling in the environment. If you close your eyes, a fresh rose smell mixed with a pinch of daisies arrive to your nose. There are several black shiny benches were you can enjoy the unreal image of this place. Mockingbirds sing beautiful melodies that accompany you in this surreal spot. Baby ducks swim inside the lake that shines as its own and little furry squirrels  climb up the tallest trees you could ever see. I cannot imagine a more perfect places.

1) Brainstorm ideas to compare and contrast. Think of people, places and things. The compare the list with your partner.

People: shy people, loud people; optimistic people, pessimistic people; fashion-conscious, non-fashion-conscious...

Places: villages, cities; cold, hot places; sunny, cloudy; active, boring areas; old-fashioned, modern sites...

Things: material; fragile, sturdy objects; practical, useless instruments;

Because of its material, the new crystal bag by Coperni, its purpose is useless, I need a more practical one.

Since pessimistic people are taking over the world, I like to have a more optimistic view of life.

Due to the sunny place I had drowned up in, I cannot imagine living in a cold city like Paris.

COMPARE THE TWO PICTURES THAT ARE PROJECTED

Places can be very different from each other. For example, on the left coziness is the first idea that comes to mind, meanwhile, the photo on the right feels uncomfortable and noisy. We can also appreciate the happiness from the couple that enjoys time with their dog, in contrast to the stress it is perceive from the lonely girl. Both places are in closed doors.

SIMILARITIES

There are some similarities in this photos. First of all, we can see two people in both. It is also appreciated that both couples are two women, none of them facing towards. In addition, they transmit a relaxing energy and the illumination is not intense.

DIFFERENCES

To start, in the first one there is only one woman while in the other there is a group of men. In addition the group of men is having a great time drinking and having fun, in contrast to the woman, who is stretching and doing a yoga session.

Nevertheless, there are also some similarities. Although they do it in a extremely different way, they are both having a relaxed time. The color range is in both white, with a pop of color.

SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES BETWEEN:

RIDING A HORSE ON LAND VS IN WATER

The surface in which we ride a horse is crucial to get the activity done. We can observe both similarities and differences between galloping this beautiful animal inside water or on a plane surface.

To start off, both elements come from nature. It is important that the animal is confortable in the place this action is being taken. A natural surrounding can be perceived by the horse as a familiar  environment. Thus, the job will be performed in a better way. In addition, in both places we will observe different species to interact with and make the activity more fun. Furthermore, both water and also land (in open air) have a great concentration of oxygen.

Nevertheless, there are a much bigger quantity of differences than similarities. First of all, the unsteady surface of water cannot compete against the stable area of a landscape. Furthermore, there is an evident chromatic contrast between the greenish tones of the grass in contrast of the blue colors that the aquatic space offers. To finish, a swimming pool, a lake or other aquatic alternatives becomes an endless source of  water for the horse to drink, in contrast of the dry environment of the land.

To conclude, a horse is a delicate mammal who needs special care for it to stay healthy and alive. The areas to ride it are endless, but choosing wisely and analyzing the differences and similarities can make the world in performing this activity.

10/10/2022 PRACTICE Nº 4

Ken Robinson’s TED talk:

Do Schools Kill Creativity?

We are going to watch a TED talk and answer the following questions:

1. What’s the topic oft he TED talk? What’s the main idea? When does the speaker introduce his idea? How?

The topic is education.

The main idea is the relevance of creativity in present times inside the educational system

He introduces this idea at the beginning of the talk, after giving a contextualization.

2. What are the means of support used by the speaker to convince us that his opinion is right? Provide examples.

He adds facts:

Personal experiences: "My son said..."
Corporations: "According to the UNESCO..."
Historical events: "The educational system was designed in during the industrialization"
Expert opinion: Jona Salk
Definition: "Inteligence is dynamic, distinct..."

3. What’s the speaker’s conclusion? How does he “conclude”?

His conclusion is that the educational system should let other capacities get developed in schools.

HOMEWORK: OPINION PARAGRAPH

The educational system should give enough importance to creativity. In the current state of schools, creativity and other capacities are not taken with the same consideration as other skills. Students that want to participate in a more creative environment and an artistic world are facing the neglect of institutions that do not support this sphere. If there were more grants in arts and human studies, there would be an increase of the relevance of these subjects in academic sites. There should be enough room for every child to grow knowing his or her own capacities and explore their potential. The cultural value of a society must be preserved along generations and it will only be this way if the educational system adapts to the new circumstances.

  • not exercising: The bones weaken and lose some of their mineral content. Metabolism may be affected and the body may have more trouble synthesizing fats and sugars which can cause the immune system not to work as well.

PROBLEM SOLUTION PARAGRAPH
DRUGS

Drugs are becoming a big concern in current society. One out of 5 young people have tried a drug and 1 out of 10 are addicted to one. Drug use can have serious consequences for the future, both for a young person and an adult, because drugs can alter the way the brain works and cause other serious medical consequences. Drug abuse is a behavior that can be prevented. However, the long-term effects of drugs on the brain can lead to drug addiction, which is a chronic, relapsing disease of the brain.

To end with drug consumption there are some tips that can help. The first one is to have a professional intervention, no one can do this big step alone. It is also important to Set clear goals and be determined to change. It may be a better option to set a goal to achieve over time than trying to quit drugs cold turkey. And thirdly, to gradually reduce both the quantity and the number of doses until finally not consuming any type of drug.

17/10/2022 PRACTICE Nº 5

Figurative language used in poems of comparison

  • Similes compare two things that have an element uncommon usually with like and as. They are explicit.

Example: Emeralds are as green as grass, a ruby red as blood.

(from “Flint” by Christina Rossetti)

  • Metaphors also compare two unlike things, but without the words like or as. They are implicit.

Example: The night is a big black cat.

(from “The Night Is a Big Black Cat” by G. Orr Clark)

We do not know exactly if they are compared with each other because of the colour (black) or the silence both elements present.

  • Personification is to apply actions or human characteristics to an object or animal.

Example: I thought I heard the city crying in its sleep

(from “Foghorns” by Lilian Moore)

ANALYSING A SHAKESPEARE SONET pastedGraphic.png

SONET XVIII

Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?

Thou art more lovely and more temperate.

Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,

And summer’s lease hath all too short a date.

Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,

And often is his gold complexion dimmed;

And every fair from fair sometime declines,

By chance, or nature’s changing course, untrimmed;

But thy eternal summer shall not fade,

Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow’st,

Nor shall death brag thou wand’rest in his shade,

When in eternal lines to Time thou grow’st.

So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see,

So long lives this, and this gives life to the

MY POEM

Shall I compare you to a song?

Though the echo of your voice

sounds better than a perfect noise.

We can be the pentagram's heart.

SAY IF THE TOPIC SENTENCE IS APROPIATE

  • I think oranges are fantastic but not at night.

It is not appropriate because it gives an opinion and it is not impersonal or neutral

  • Rhytmic patterns in modern music have undergone deep transformations in terms of length, stress and adequacy to the industry trends; for example, reggae ton rhythms have merged with trap, but also with pop

It is not adequate because it is a very long sentence and it also gives an example, which is not appropriate.

PAGE 53, EXCERCISE 10

10.  Work with a group. For each if these topic sentences, brainstorm solutions. Introduce each solution in one of the phrases above. Then think of one more problem together and give it to another group to discuss.

a) We must reduce examen stress for secondary school students:

In order to solve these problems it is necessary to teach students how to organize their study time and follow and schedule. In addition, professors could reduce the amount of homework given when it is set an exam. Also, it is recommended to do respiration exercises and meditation.

b) Teenagers spend so much time using their mobile phones that they are no longer skilled at face-to-face interaction.

One solution is the prohibition of cellphones in schools that will only teenagers to talk to each other. Other solution is to set up a time limit in technological devices especially while using social media.

c) In the next five to ten years, experts predict that there won't be enough doctors and nurses to meet hospitals' needs.

To meet this need it may be an option to increase the amount of money it is given to sanitary professionals and to create new jobs that can be fulfilled by young students from university.

d) We need to find ways to protect young children from violence on television.

In order to overcome this problem it is important that programs respect children's schedule on television and follow the age a person should have in order to consume this productions. Other solution is to apply the parental control in some apps such as Youtube.

Write an essay using the outline above.

My journey to this day has been a tough one. For me, sometimes it could get really difficult to continue. Luckily, I experienced and meet some coincidences that changed everything for the better. In my life there has been some people, events and decisions that I consider that made me the person I am.

There are some people that play an important part in my life. First and foremost my mother and my two big brothers. At first, we had a lot of conflicts and we did not get along very well. Nevertheless, at the end we could understand each other and I their existence is vitally fundamental for me. I also consider my three best friends Carmen, Elena and Ana as an essential pilar in my life. They make my life more easy thanks for their unconditional support. Finally, although I do not know these people personally, some artists and entertainers like Kendrick Lamar and Samantha Hudson made me feel connected to them when I was feeling alone when I was younger.

During my live, I had to live some events that determined life aspects. For example, two years ago I went to London with my godfather and two brothers, one of my happiest experience with them. From that moment I discovered what I wanted to do with in my future and I cherish that memory. However, I also experienced some sad events like the cancer diagnosis of my mother or a car accident one of my best friend had. They both had to fight for their life but, luckily everything ended as good as it could get. Now I have a different perspective of live.

Lastly,  some decisions I made have changed my life in enormous aspects. For example, changing from Science studies to Arts studies. Since I came back from the trip to London, I discovered my passion for Art and mastering everything about it. It was a very difficult process to be in, but I consider it one of the best choices I have ever taken. The other big decision I took that has helped me in a daily basis is starting to go to therapy. It made my anxiety a little easier to cope with and it also lead me to meditating, an activity that I never thought it could help me.

These little factors in my life have helped me along my vital journey. From time to time the universe brings people, events and decisions that will stay forever.  I am extremely grateful for these tiny coincidences come in my life.

imaginable as a dream.

Your introductory paragraph goes on the lines below:

Imagine waking up to the sound of waves. The silence is so loud that it is imposible to come out of the bed. However, a never-ending blue silky ocean is waiting for you to enter until your fingertips get winkled. It looks like a fairy tale landscape, as un
imaginable as a dream. Nevertheless, this place is just as real as it could get. Asturias is an underrated location and one of the most suitable places to have a vacation in.

  3. Underline the thesis twice.

If I could have any job in the world and be great at what I do I would want to be a surgeon so I can save lives, positively affect the world, and be proud of my job.

    Sample essay 2

    1. How many sentences was the lead?

      4

    2. Put a box around the lead.

Joey was driving home after a school dance one Friday night. As usual he was driving fast and his Ford began to skid. He frantically turned the steering wheel, but the car went out of control and crossed the center line. It tragically slammed into an oncoming truck, and both drivers were killed.

    3. Underline the thesis twice.

Therefore, all high school districts should require that student attend driver’s training longer in order to strengthen the teenagers ability to drive.

    4. Label the bridge

Most high schools offer courses, but the courses are not rigorous enough, or hold accountability to logged hours by each teenager.

Exercise: Now it is your turn to write an introductory paragraph using an anecdote lead.

Essay prompt: If you could have any job in the world and be great at it, what would you choose and why?

    Brainstorm:

When I was in high school I was the teacher's pet. I would skip classes to be with my English teacher and watch her teach other students. One day, one of the students asked me for help. While I was explaining the lesson to him, other students gathered around to listen. When I was just about to finish my explanation, the bell rang and I had to leave. They all thank me as I was leaving for my explanation. It is curious how a different, more close relationship towards who you are teaching can improve their understanding. From that moment, I understood why teaching was meant to be my future profession
